Milford Mill was where Derwent Hydro first began exporting electricity through the national grid, back in 1990. The main aspects of the scheme are very old, with the current generator, gearbox and turbine dating from the 1930s. The turbine is a Gilkes vertical shaft pit francis. Water reaches the turbine via a long leat that passes several hundred meters from the top weir and under some industrial premises and a major road. Borrowash Hydro Scheme
At Borrowash DHPL has installed siphonic propeller turbines, designed and built in-house. The site is also used as a research location by academic institutions. Exported power is sold through the NFFO. Belper Mill
Belper Mill is situated just a couple of miles upstream from Milford, and was taken on by Derwent Hydro in 1999. Again the turbines were originally manufactures by Gilkes and are of the pit francis type. The leat is significantly shorter than at Milford but operation is more sensitive since the weir holds back water for a boating lake as well as providing hydraulic head for the mill, and is surrounded by flood gates which are also maintained and operated by DHPL. Burton Mill
This site uses a small proportion of the very large flow of the River Trent at Burton. Again the Gilkes pit francis installation is very old. A major refurbishment is planned for 2007 to reduce noise and improve productivity, to compliment conversion of the mill buildings for residential occupation. At 1.2m this is a very low head site but it exists as proof that installations on such small falls are possible where the available will and finances are available. Sturston Hydro
At Sturston Mill DHPL have installed a small crossflow turbine, designed and built in-house, which uses the water from an existing mill pond to generate a small amount of electricity which is used by a local farmer to offset his consumption. Dolanog Hydro StationThe Dolanog site is operated by DHPL’s wholly owned subsidiary Dopower Limited. See www.dopower.co.uk for more information. |
